MILLENNIUM PROTOTYPE

The information in this section is provided from a collector who was able to find and purchase the parts of the world's only known Millennium Prototype. The parts originate from a car dismantler who officially destroys parts from test series/prototypes for the VW Group!
Parts without a VIN or serial number stamped on them occasionally find their way to VW enthusiasts or eccentric hobbyists, as is the case here!
With these original VW prototype parts, he will revive the prototype used back then, as authentically as possible, based on an "Official Cup Millennium Car" (VIN ID known), for the New Beetle community and all the VW enthusiasts.

For questions specifically about the "Millennium Prototype," he is certainly the best person to contact!

ON THE SUBJECT:

Before series production kicks off, the pilot departments of the factories build so-called pre-production cars, or "prototypes," which are then tested in everyday use. After the designs are approved, these cars are later handed over to VW-authorized scrap yards. Parts with stamped VINs or serial numbers are destroyed – other components apparently may also find their way to Beetle enthusiasts, who can buy them there.

Recently, a "Millennium Cup Edition" fan from Austria acquired a parts box that demonstrably came from a prototype of this series (… lot of points indicate that to the presented prototype Dubai). Based on these comparisons and the resulting findings, it is clear that VW was officially aware of this special series and the car's presentetion in the UAE. They were involved in the project and used their company structures for the production of these cars.

A MIX OF STANDARD BEETLE, RSI, CUP BEETLE AND VARIOUSE STOCK ITEMS!

Let's take a closer look at the similarities and logical connections in the following images:

  • And this was before November 1, 2000, because after that date only the new EU license plates were issued! German registration and a Braunschweig license plate. The first two images show a car in the "Millennium Design" on German roads!    Note 1"
The only known RSI in BLUE also initially had a Braunschweig license plate? COINCIDENCE?  "Note 1"

  • The single-pipe exhaust system of the Millennium car is also clearly visible, bearing the company's signature – with the "VW logo" and "E1 marking."

"Note 1"

  • These stickers are the same as the one on the prototype presented in the UAE, larger and positioned further forward, closer to the door gap, than on any production car!
Who was the supplier for the VW decals back then? It would be really interesting to know!

  • The E1 marking is an ECE approval mark (UN/ECE regulation) and confirms the testing and approval of the component in Germany, the EU, and other countries!

The questions are:

  • Where did this "Millennium Beetle" get its special rear air vents at that time? They don't exist on any other VW model, not even on the RSI !

  • Why, and under what authorization from VW, was this or a nearly identical car already on display at the Dubai Auto Show on November 10, 1999, and also at the UAE VW importer "Al Naboodah" in their brand-new showroom?

  • Why was this exact prototype presented to dealers in the Gulf States by Al Naboodah in 1999, subsequently ordered by 80 cars, and delivered to these importers in various Gulf States according to precisely allocated quotas? This was again confirmed in 2025 by an Al Naboodah employee!

  • Why was this exact prototype presented to dealers in the Gulf States by Al Naboodah in 1999, and why were 80 cars subsequently ordered and delivered to these importers in various Gulf States according to precisely allocated quotas?

  • Who actually modified these cars? *

  • A thousand clues and confirmations point to the VW Group, but not a single one the contrary!

  • Where did the Beetle with the unique Millennium decals come from – if not from the VW Group?

  • Why were there never any parts or documentation for these dealers, customers, buyers, etc.?

  • Is there a similar car anywhere in the world that was allowed to use VW design, know-how, and logos in a hobbyist's garage and then subsequently received the parts for the conversion of just 80 cars from VW's in-house suppliers – even though, according to VW, parts for these cars were never available?

Questions upon Questions that VW should finally answer to put an end to the countless rumors about these cars within the VW community.

A single contact via email (…with a provided name and address) claimed that there is another story to that, but never responded to further inquiries or even a small hint on his idea OR the facts presented here. ! ... but it also should  be mentioned here :)
** This statement comes from a local automotive website in the UAE, where else the the presentation at the VW importer Al Nabooda is a fact and confirmed by Al Nabooda!

A mix of the standard Beetle, RSI, CUP Beetle and excisting parts from stock!

A mix of standard Beetle, RSI, CUP Beetle and various stock vehicles!

Many of the cars - like the car shown above - which obviously result from a presentation for the customer, are designed using parts from existing stocks at VW, the RSI or the CUP racing cars. Some of these parts later were changed at customer request! The data collection in the well-known RSI study program document also shows many of the same / similar parts of this special series.

Everything to shed light on the “CUP MILLENNIUM BEETLE” and create facts.

Here we show the most obvious differences from the presentation car to the later " CUP MILLENNIUM BEETLE" :

  • Split front spoiler - from the CUP car

  • Missing Flash Lights in spoiler

  • Larger rear spoiler - from the CUP car

  • Side mirror - from Beetle of the 1st generation

  • Bucket seats  - probably from racing cars ( VW RACING department?? )

  • Mini spoiler above the front windscreen - later replaced by decorative stickers

  • DECOR - at the time of presentation this was a little larger and also positioned differently

As always, tips on the topic, contemporary witnesses at VW, the racing department, information about the recycling companies or material or knowledge that has not yet been discovered are very welcome :)

Parts found at RSI CABRIO Prototype - clearly from Cup Edition production

Found like this - traces of the Cup Edition cars... undeniable!
The pictures taken from a VW depot, where a prototype of the "RSI CABRIO" is in stock. This - it's obviously not an RSI convertible but a standard Beetle convertible with RSI body kit - has parts installed that were only produced for and installed on the Cup Edition cars in Puebla!

As I said, the convertible uses the look of the RSI, but unfortunately the second exhaust pipe from the RSI engine is missing there and for this reason the cover of the reversing light and two of the center grilles of the Cup Edition models were used to cover the defuser hole and to hide the exhaust hole of the real RSI there! ... the pictures are evidence & speak for them!

The facts are clear, and it's inexplicable why VW isn't providing any answers regarding this project, but is even responding to official inquiries with "We don't know this car!"

Such statements are reminiscent of familiar VW statements from the recent past.
Does VW really intend to let this stand? Official facts, such as the VIN numbers of these cars, why they were never entered into the VW parts system, why they aren't in the VW Museum, and much more, would be greatly appreciated by the owners of these cars and the fan community, and certainly wouldn't cause the Volkswagen Group any significant trouble or loss – would they?

One day, VW will have to explain why such a rare and elegant VW model

never made its way into the VW Museum, the Classic Parts halls, the press

or into any other automotive publication.
